Looking for an engaging 3-5th grade science unit that builds students’ social emotional learning skills? Want to learn how to engage and motivate students to solve science problems/needs through a student-directed project?
Join us to learn about Connect Science a research-based interdisciplinary unit that integrates social emotional learning, science, and service-learning.
Participants will receive 5 Days of Professional Development and individual consultation with a coach as they plan and implement Connect Science with students. Connect Science is a 12-week project-based learning unit through which 3rd-5th grade teachers explore the topics of energy and natural resources in depth and engage their students in science,writing, reading and math through service-learning. The program prepares students to be knowledgeable and engaged citizens who can collaborate with others to solve community problems.
Participants Attend Trainings:
- 4-days of training, Tuesday- Friday, 9am-5pm August 5,6,7, 8, 2025. The training will be held in Waldo County, we will finalize the location, once we have final numbers of participants.
- 1 day of follow-up professional development (Fall 2025 Date/Location TBD by participants)
- Individual virtual consultation and coaching with Tracy Harkins during implementation (Fall 2025/Winter 2026/Spring2026)
- Reflection Session (Spring or Summer 2026- Date/Location TBD by participants)
Participants Receive:
- Sequenced lessons that target science, social and emotional and civic concepts and skills as they enact a successful service-learning project (many of these lessons can be integrated into writing, reading and math)
- A set of materials needed to teach science lessons
- Read-aloud books to supplement the curriculum
- $1350 stipend upon completion of the unit with students
Expectations for Participation:
- Participating teachers will implement the Connect Science Energy curriculum with 3-5th grade students during the 2025-26 school year
- Teachers will attend all professional development opportunities (see above)
Connect Science is an evidence based program listed in the CASEL Program Guide for Effective Social Emotional Learning Programs.
This event is sponsored by a Climate Education Professional Development Grant received by RSU 71 from Maine Department of Education. Training and materials are free for all ME educators. First priority will go to educators from RSU 71, 20 and 3, then Belfast Watershed, then will open up to any Maine teacher.
